vuiewpoint
The ancient complex of the Nitra Castle is located on one of the seven Nitra hills. In these places, the Nitra prince Pribina had the first Christian church in our territory built in 828. The missionaries St. Cyril and Methodius brought the first Slavic script here and spread Christianity. Since 880, the castle has been the seat of the bishopric. In the period of Great Moravia, it was the seat of Prince Svätopluk, and in the Middle Ages the largest castle in Slovakia.
During many battles, uprisings and Tatar-Turkish falls, the castle was burned down several times and then gradually restored and fortified. The last major reconstruction took place in 1704, when the cathedral church was rebuilt and the bishop's palace was completed. Today, the Nitra Castle is the seat of the Roman Catholic Church - the Bishopric of Nitra. Its centre is the Basilica of St. Emmeram, which consists of the upper church, the lower church and the Romanesque church from the 11th century. The cathedral tower overlooks the entire town. The Bishop's Palace is the seat of the bishop and is open to the public once a year, including the memorial room of Bishop Ján Chryzostom Korec. Unique is the Diocesan Museum with an exhibition of objects from the beginning of Christianity in Slovakia and an exhibition of historical liturgical objects. In the casemate, we can find an exposition of early medieval life.
